Princess Galyanni Vadhana Royal Cremation:

Tens of thousands of Thai and foreign visitors gathered to solemnly watch the cremation ceremony of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyanni Vadhana. The ceremony was held in Sanam Luang ceremonial grounds adjacent to the Grand Palace. Her Royal Highness passed away on January 2nd this year, after a long battle with cancer, she was 84 years old.

Thousands of troops wearing ceremonial uniform stood guard over the cremation procedures.

Many mourners wearing black attended. The brought with them ‘dokmai chan’ (paper flowers used in cremation rites) to place with the Princesses remains.

The government also held traditional celebrations consisting of Thai drama and dance depicting scenes from the Ramayana Story as well as traditional puppet shows.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) was very close to his elder sister. A popular member of the Royal family, the Princess worked tirelessly to promote the development of the Kingdom and the well-being of its people. Her passing has brought much sadness to Thai communities throughout the world
