Some 38km from Kanchanaburi, along highway 323 lies Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua, a Thervada Buddhist temple, which is probably better known by its western name: Tiger Temple.

Tiger Temple has been caring for tigers since 1995 when local villagers rescued an abandoned tiger cub. Over the years, several other tiger cubs were given to the temple either as unwanted 'pets' or because their mothers had been killed by poachers. The tigers that remained under the care of the monks have since bred and so the temple is now home to many adult tigers and tiger cubs. Every day some of the adult tigers are taken by the monks for a walk around a nearby quarry. It is possible for visitors to pet some of the animals and have your photo taken with them.
As well as tigers, the temple is home to many other animals including camels, water buffalo, wild boar, goats, ponies, peacocks and gibbons.
