The most famous and probably the most popular way to cross Victoria Harbor is onboard one of Hong Kong’s iconic Star Ferries. The Star Ferry Company has been transporting passengers between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon for more than a hundred years. There are 12 different Star Ferries, including one that is a reproduction of a ferry from the 1920s and features a coffee shop and a deck for sunbathing. The Star Ferry Company operates four routes across the Harbor; the most popular tourist route is the main one, which runs between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. Star Ferries have remained popular with locals too, mainly because their ticket prices are the cheapest in Hong Kong, the ferries run very frequently and it only takes about ten minutes to cross the harbor.

If a ten minute trip doesn’t do it for you, you can indulge yourself in a one hour cruise around the harbor. These are available through Star Ferries, but there are also private operators who offer tours too, including a few who use reproduction ancient Chinese junks. However you cross the water, it is a really fabulous way to see the city’s famous skyline and absorb the heady atmosphere of a busy international port, whilst enjoying a relaxed cruise and a cool sea breeze. Taking a cruise by day is wonderful, but there is something special that makes taking an evening cruise a must for any visitor to Hong Kong: The Symphony of Lights.

The Symphony of Lights is a light, laser and firework extravaganza which is performed every night (weather permitting). The show starts at 8pm and lasts around 20 minutes. Laser beams bounce off of 33 skyscrapers on both sides of the harbor, all in time to music, with a commentary that tells the story of Hong Kong’s growth from a sleepy fishing village to the cosmopolitan city it is today.
