Take a short walk from Memorial Bridge towards Chinatown in Bangkok and the first thing that will strike you is the wonderful smell of exotic fragrances that perfume the air. Walk a little further and you will soon find yourself surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands of beautiful, vibrantly colored flowers. Often omitted from the usual tourist trips, this hidden gem is Pak Khlong Talat, Bangkok's main commercial flower market.

Open 24 hours a day, every day, Pak Khlong Talat is at its busiest after dark between 6pm and 2am, when flower growers from all over the Kingdom arrive to sell their wares. Here, you will find a huge range of flowers (either home grown in Thailand or imported from neighboring countries), including orchids, lilies, jasmine, roses, marigolds, sun flowers, gerbera, bird of paradise and jacaranda to name just a few. As well as enjoying the rich colors and heady perfumes of the flowers, you can also watch the stall holders expertly prepare floral arrangements and string together the highly scented Thai flower garland Phuang Malai.

The flower market has a very strict daily schedule, starting way outside Bangkok with the cutting of the flowers, which are cut and being transported by 4 pm. When they make it to Bangkok the artisans at the market prepare the arrangements for hotels and restaurants throughout Bangkok. This makes night time the best time to go, their stocks are full and colorful.
