The island of Koh Muk, located south east of Koh Lanta in southern Thailand offers an unusual adventure – exploring Tham Morakot otherwise known as the Emerald Cave.
To discover the delights of the Emerald Cave you need to be happy to get wet because the tunnel leading to the cave is partly submerged in water. The small entrance is only revealed during low tide, hidden as it is amongst the limestone cliffs.

Swimmers wearing life jackets tie themselves to a rope and float (conga-style) for about 100m through a dark tunnel before emerging into a beautiful secluded lagoon which is ringed with white sand and surrounded by towering cliffs. The water in the pool really is emerald green - caused by the light reflecting through the water onto the limestone floor of the lagoon.
Please note that there is only one entrance to the cave, so pay attention to your guide and to the tides or you may not be able to get back through the tunnel again. Divers can obviously dive through the tunnel at high tide. Halfway through the tunnel there is a small cavern with an air pocket inside which divers may also like to explore.

This is a popular destination for both Thais and foreign visitors, so unless you arrive early or late in the day you will find the tiny bay crammed with boats of all shapes and sizes. Don’t despair, even when crowded, the whole experience is extremely fun, perhaps more so as the Thais shriek and laugh - they really know how to enjoy themselves.
Getting there
You can only reach the entrance to the Emerald Cave on Koh Muk by boat. Longtails and speedboats can be hired from Koh Muk. Longtails also run from Pak Meng pier on the mainland or from Koh Lanta and most of the other neighboring islands.
