One of the most enigmatic and beautiful of the Khmer ruins is the small temple at Banteay Srei. Unlike the other temples at Angkor, Banteay Srei was not built by a king, but by a nobleman who served during the reign of King Rajendravarman II and King Jayavarman V. Construction on the temple began in the year 967 AD. Dedicated to the Hindu deity Tribhuvanamaheshvara the temple was built using beautiful pink sandstone. The name Banteay Srei is a modern Khmer name meaning 'Citadel of the Women'. The exquisite carvings and intricate decoration of the sculptures have earned the temple the title 'Jewel of Khmer art'.

Because Banteay Srei is located outside of the main temple buildings of Angkor it takes a bit of time to get there (about an hour by car), however if you have the time, do not miss the chance to enjoy the beauty of this wonderful temple.
